Yahoo has won $610 million in a lawsuit against online swindlers in Nigeria and Thailand, who stole passwords, credit card information, and social security numbers in a scam which promised email recipients the chance to win a Yahoo lottery.
Yahoo knows that it is unlikely to get any of the $610 million because the conmen are very difficult to track down. Regardless, it says that it is happy with the judgement because the lawsuit was made to protect its brand equity, not to make money for the internet corporation.
