The BBB is reporting that the owners of lost pets are being scammed by people claiming to have them. The people who call the phone number assert that they have the pet and demand the money to be wired to them, even before the pet is returned. Some scammers warn that they would hurt the pet if they don’t have the money wired to them.
Scams involving lost dogs, cats, and other pets have gotten creative. Some people call pet owners, telling them that they found the pet in another state and that they need money to ship the pet back to you. Others say that they are truck drivers which found your pet and need money to ship it back to you.
These fraudsters cruelly prey on the emotions of desperate pet owners. If you happen to have lost a pet and are putting out fliers, make sure that you leave out some information so that if anyone calls you, you can verify that they have your pooch. For example, if your dog has a very visible scar, make sure to leave that information out in case anyone calls you. You may save yourself a lot of time and money.
