Eight men and one woman were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud as part of a criminal network whose global phone scam made millions off stolen mobile iPhones. Investigating officers stated that mobile phones were purchased using false identities and the SIM cards were then used to call premium-rate phone lines, which were owned by those involved in the iPhone scam.
The cards amassed enormous bills, which were paid by the mobile phone networks. However, when the companies contacted the account holders they found that they had fallen victim to fraud by these criminals. Investigators have traced the stolen handsets and SIM cards all over the world, including several countries in the Middle East, continental Europe and Vietnam.
